I'll agree on the water. Can't be lived without. Our farm runs two rife rams (not electric) from a beautiful large spring to the highest point on the farm and all barns, critters and cabins are gravity fed. If the grid goes down for real - will be able to supply my farming community with ample water for their stock too. Could really unify our farming community and gain their protection. just saying....

I like your awards showcase. I can't find out how to access it to put mine in. Do you remember how you did,it?

Great to see rabbit people on here! I have been trying to convince the local of the benefits of raising rabbits; I get sick of the pathetic "I could NEVER kill a rabbit, they're too cute". That same person couldn't kill the ugliest chicken either I'm quite certain.

I think I am going to go get 10k Synthroid tablets. I can't believe how difficult they are for people to get stocked up on. I'm heading to Mexico in the coming month or so. What dose is good? Think of DOUBLE the dose so I can get bottles of pills that can be split in half. They are the same price regardless of dose so you're basically getting twice as much for the same price.

Given their age, and the diarrhea, it sounds like the rabbit version of "scours". It's pretty common with buns being switched over from mama's milk to solid food. Once the diarrhea starts, they can die in 12-24 hours.

I avoided it with mine by ALWAYS having the solid food (hay and pellets, greens like carrot, beet, clover, and occasional dandelion greens) available from the time their eyes are open and they are moving around, so that they start getting used to the solid food even though they are still nursing. I also don't wean them until they are about 6-8 weeks old. By that time, they are nursing partially, and eating solid food, so the transition over to just the solid food is easier. Avoid iceberg lettuce--it will give them diarrhea in a hurry.

Hope that I've given some helpful information. Don't feel bad about losing the ones you did...there are a LOT of things that can go wrong with rabbits, and even experienced rabbit keepers lose some. It goes with the territory.

Mornin', I've done SO much research, but need a "real rabbit person's" opinion. 12 dead buns this weekend, 6 wks old, weaned at 4 doing REALLY great on 16% pellets & an occassional sassafrass leaf - seems to be a favorite! One by one they dropped, all of them had diarrhea. Any idea what I did or didn't do, and do you have a suggestion for a natural remedy? I've read all about the vet drugs and pedialite, but I'm REALLY trying to avoid all man-made chemically compounds if possible.

I've done SO well in such a short period of time, turned the kids on to rabbits, learned to butcher, cook & love the taste of them (not to mention falling in love with them!). I've frozen & canned them & sold enough rabbit meat to almost make up my initial investment - and now I feel like a bunny-murderer - because I couldn't save them.
I'd appreciate any advice you can give as you seem to be one of the most experienced rabbiteers on this site - not to mention you actually seem like a nice person.

There are a few. Some go by "other" names, though, and I'm not sure what those other names are!

    South Central PA, huh?

Me too, on top of a mountain smack dab between Waynesboro and Chambersburg.

I've just started my "rabbitorium" (rabbitry just will NOT roll off my tongue!), have 5 3-wk old kits and LOVED that you do the butchering, not the hubby. I've never butchered ANYthing, but hubby is a self-proclaimed GreatWhiteHunter and has promised to teach me without judgement. That didn't help the dream I had where my future dinner was all lined up waiting to meet their Maker and I was just sitting there crying. LOL!

Regardless, I've learned SO much from your postings and wanted to thank you.

    Thanks.

Also, looking for a llocal source for New Zealands to add to my stock, any suggestions?

    Thanks again, Jelsey
