I believe one of the more difficult things in making a move to a strange new place is making good friends. I've done a lot of moving in my life: California, Nebraska, Iowa, Idaho, New Mexico, Indiana, Illinois, Texas, Minnesota, Montana, Missouri, Arizona, and Colorado. In my experience it takes a good three years to develop deep friendships. It definitely helps if you take the initiative at put yourself out there: Church, local interest groups, local politics, etc., but it just takes time. It will happen, but it takes time.

Some great places in northern Idaho. I love it around Sand Point, Bonner's Ferry areas. Cour d' Alene is too yuppy for me, but it is both beautiful and expensive. St. Mary's is nice as well.

So when do you make the jump and get up there?

No doubt there will be times when you run up against difficulties associated with the move and you'll wonder if you made the right decision. In those difficult times just remember that you need to trust your judgment and find a way to make things work.

So glad to hear that you're taking the leap of faith and getting out of California. It's definitely hard to pull up life-long stakes and move to a very different part of the world. My wife and I were visiting in Aspen, Colorado many years ago and looking at the real estate market there the cheapest lot in town was $1 million and this was 30 years ago. I asked a guy who was a retail clerk in the Eddie Bauer store there how he decided to move to such an exorbitantly expensive town. His reply was priceless! He said, "You just have to decide."

Of course, he is correct and clearly you've made the gutsy decision to move to northern Idaho. I used to live in nw Montana not too far from there. Wonderful country and lots of peppers there. A very good choice and I am excited for you.

    Hi Mogli,

So how are things in California and are you still thinking of relocating somewhere with less craziness, lower taxes, and decent gun laws. Hopefully, you are not living in an area that is particularly troubled. I am a native Californian myself. Was a member of the first graduating class of Thousand Oaks High School in Ventura County. My thoughts are often with my fellow Californians who still live there as the place sadly continues to deteriorate into a third-world like nation.

I completely understand. It also was hard for me to leave SoCal. I had to leave family behind I didn’t want too. But I figured if I had a place even a small one at first that I could prep then they could come and be safe. Now its like grand central station. I think back on those fears and I can tell you it’s crazy how the opposite happened. I didn’t ever expect things would change where everyone wanted to be where I was. Also I saw you were with Kaiser so am I. I didn’t want to leave my Doctor. Lord he was sharp and those are few and far between. I lucked out. There is a really nice high end Kaiser in Fort Collins not far from me. I swear it’s like the Porsche of Kaisers. The Broncos go there apparently. So I just go down to Co. when I need to now. But your right that alone can be hard as hell to find a good insurance and Dr.

In considering where you'd like to move, I would offer a suggestion. Without a doubt in my mind the most freedom loving state in the union is Wyoming. You can even carry concealed there without any kind of permit as long as you're a resident of the State. Specifically, I would highly recommend the Star Valley in western Wyoming next to the Idaho border. It is a beautiful place. Housing is relatively inexpensive. Here's a typical listing for the area just for your information: https://search.starvalleyrealestate.com/idx/details/listing/a397/19-2788/308-JEFFERSON-ST-Afton-WY-83110

Wish you all the best, Richard

The good news about living in California at the moment is that when you do decide to sell your house it should fetch a very good price because, as you know, California real estate is ridiculously inflated right now. In most other states (Aspen excluded) you'll be able to do very well in purchasing a home for what you get from the sale of your California house.

I am a California native myself, born (Fowler, CA), and raised (Thousand Oaks, CA) and I can tell you that I left there in the mid-60's and never looked back. I visited family and friends there a few times in the first few years, but now I have no desire to be in that Socialist "Paradise" even for a visit.

    Hi Mogli,

I've attempted to send you a private message twice, but for whatever reason, it just isn't working, so I will give it a go here.

I hear your struggles with leaving California and I understand the constraints of family and job that complicates moving out of state. That said, I will offer some advice I received from a gentleman who lived and worked in Aspen, Colorado that I visited with some years ago. During my visit to that beautiful mountain town I had looked at property and was utterly astounded with the cost and I couldn't understand how a guy in the retail sales business could make a go of it in that town. When I asked him how he managed to move there when it was so expensive he responded, "You just have to decide."

I know we have been friends on here a long time but do we actually know each other? , did you ever live in San Diego? I hope I am not prying to much and I am not trying to be forward or flippant either. S/FI!
