The only way to REALLY practice and get better is with REAL money at a casino or with friends at home. Just be sure to start at the lowest limit game you can find. After each time you play, you'll remember situations you came upon and will be anxious to read the book again to find those situations.
    Just remember the 4 ways:
    1) play high and premium hands ONLY.
    2) when you see no pause on their checks, STEAL that pot. (if it's rather small and no more than 2 or 3 players in)
    3) Make good laydowns. If you bet and someone raises you, 95% of the time, throw your hand away.
    4) don't tip much.
(I won a $205 pot today playing and tipped $7.)
someone ELSE raised, usually means QQ, KK, AA or sometimes AK. A THIRD raise, means pocket A's.

In a REAL game, the 2nd raise after

Good luck and let me know how it goes.

Yeah, that's what you get, playing with funny money. It's not the best/most realistic way to play or practice. If it were REAL money, they wouldn't be so bold. Better perhaps to play in a tournament format w/fake money but worth a try.
Those guys are trying to play like they see on TV and it's not realistic Dave.

Yeah, I used to play 5 draw as a kid. There's much more skill in Hold'em. Read my other replies here, I recommn'd another book there.
It's good that you haven't played Holdem much, as you won't have to UNLEARN bad habit till you read my book.
I've finished it btw, just polishing it up now. It you wanted, I could email it to you in rough draft form. It's going to cost $20 online and in person. But you could have the very first copy for $18 if you wanted to get started on it. Got Paypal? or cash by snail mail would work.
Ask Biggman on that thread about me...he's read every book I've written. I even gave him one or two books. He'll tell you whether you can trust this stranger in cyberspace and could give you reviews on my writing.
The very first time you play, after reading half the book, it'll way more than pay for itself.

Ahh, I see you're former Army. I always put an Army Sgt in my books, especially the 1st and 2nd. My 1st two novels, Expect the Unexpected and The Vigilante Sniper, ESPECIALLY feature a retired master sgt from the Army. My Dad was a staff sgt in WWII, got his finger shot off by mortar fire...anyway, so I always pay homage and salute our sgts of the military - they are the REAL backbone, not seat shining officers.

Mr. Brunson is one of the best - he's humble about it too. He didn't self destruct like the two other best in the world, Stu Ungar and Chip Reese.
Are the dog track games legal? ;-) Not writing this time under the AJ name...it'll have to be a different fictitious name. My book will probably be out in about 2 months. Those publishers are slow. IF you really want to good book in the interim, read T J Cloutier's book on tourney play, used to be a blue book, perhaps co-authored by Tom McEnvoy too. It'll start you out right, albeit with tourney play. . . but at least he'll introduce you to ONE of the four things you need to do. . . which I elaborate more on.

Am from the south too, Ky. We in southern Ky consider that the south anyway. ;-) Not as deep south as you guys. Have written mostly mystery/adventure some fiction, some non fiction. My latest is on Amazon dot com called Nefarious Eyes. Check it out. Have made much of my living playing poker so thought it about time to write that book. I make my house mortgage, 3/4 ton truck payment, and pay all my bills with my poker earnings. Many people don't think one can consistently win playing Hold'em, but about 3% do. Anyone can be taught to win IF and that's a big IF, if they can be patient and disciplined. I met Stu Ungar back in the day at the Horseshoe, Dewey Tompko in Costa Rica at a tournament, Annie Duke at a WPT tournament, the DevilFish from England, several others... all that and 4 quarters might get you a dollar though. Where do you play, at a casino?

I read the link you gave me about the Book of Enoch. Though I have read things on that website before that I liked; I disagree w/ them about the Book of Enoch.

I did not find any thing blasphemous about that book. I liked how it went into details about the fallen angels. That is just my opinion. I would suggest you pray on it and read it for yourself and decide for yourself. :)

Canadians take people as they are, mostly. But we have a-holes here too. But if you're a decent fella almost everyone else will be decent to you in return. Again, there are some idiots, but they're everywhere. I wouldn't worry about being American, most of us have family in the US. I doubt there are two closer countries on earth.
