Truckee is nice if you head on down 80. It has a few decent eateries, some historical sites, and a beautiful lake that hides in the shadow of Lake Tahoe.
If you head on down 50 for an hour you'll hit Placerville. Its a historical Gold Rush town with lots of historical stuff, a few interesting watering holes, and a haunted hotel.
Also on 50 just past the climb up from Tahoe is the Pacific Crest trail, Desolation wilderness...its kinda like a mini Yosemite. It has hiking, a giant waterfall that can bee seen from the side of the highway, and a nice little in the nearby town of Strawberry.
