Tenngrizz, people think the 5.56 is underpowered as a military caliber so to them that means it is underpowered as a hunting caliber. They pay no attention to the fact that most deer hunting is 30-150 yards, and that the military uses NATO bullets, which are not hunting bullets. I think if the military used expanding soft points the situation would be different.

Sarco just a question why do you think the 223/5.56 is disliked by some for hunting mid-sized game. Some times I think folks have a disbelief that people are capable of taking head or neck shots out to 300 yds with a scoped rifle. No need to start another debate with all the experts on here and there is really nothing wrong with any of the weapons choices out there and most are capable of decent accuracy as long has one does at least some basic marksmen ship training with your modern weapon and rifle cartridge of choice. JMHO and S/FI!

I noticed you were asking questions about a repeater in one of the threads. Here's a link to my description of why and how they are used (in layman's terms): http://firewallsrus.blogspot.com/2014/08/repeaters.html
Here is a radio I can set up upstairs or hoist it into a tree on a string and get around some of the "line of site" issues when working in ravines or basements. If you look down further on the review, I list a clandestine use for the radio which could be why I have several. http://firewallsrus.blogspot.com/2014/06/ham-radio-new-toy-arrives.html

Another possible SHTF use for the cheap (pretty much disposable) chinese radios would be the ability to set one up with a motion detector a mile or so from your perimeter. http://firewallsrus.blogspot.com/2014/07/inexpensive-handheld-transceivers-in.html

I hope that answers your questions.

To attract the attention of the FCC, you have to be breaking the rules AND obnoxious about it. You aren't going to have any problems in a rural setting using Baofeng or other radios on GMRS frequencies. Listen and see if you hear anybody using them. If not, you aren't bothering anyone. For the vehicle, if you are just interested in a bit more range and if you aren't close to a body of water, you might think of something like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/ICOM-IC-M412-FIXED-MOUNT-VHF-MARINE-TRANSCEIVER-BOAT-YACHT-MARINE-RADIO-BLACK-/262842240997?hash=item3d329e4fe5:g:m0QAAOSwo4pYmNLy

at $99 each and 25watts of output. I know the baofengs will transmit on marine VHF frequecies, so it would be compatible with the baofengs you have. Just don't spend too much time on them and keep an ear on nearby frequencies to see if "legitimate" users might be in a position to complain.

Hi. I just went to Amazon and looked over your books. I am going to have my wife get "Charlie's Burden" and your book on a solar power setup for her Kindle, since thats her area. We've been wanting to set up some solar power on our small farm/home and I believe your book is what we need. Plus, the reviews of "Charlie's Burden" sounds right up our alley. Take care.

I just bought your book's Kindle edition from Amazon. Thanks for the offer for the free copy but I believe you deserve to be paid for your work! Thanks and I'll be sure to post a review when I'm done!

    Best,
    William
