It doesnt take a disaster. Lose electricity in a city for a week or two and the same thing will happen.

Looters will take what is easy to grab or essentially risk-free. A strong show of intent to defend will deter looters. Look at Los Angeles during the rioting in the 1990's. The Koren shopkeepers were left with a viable business when the neighborhood all around them was looted and buned. That is because they were in front of their stores and on the roof tops with guns.

A few people tried to loot them, but they regretted it. I recall the news clip of the Korean convenience store owner outside the front door with a Colt 1911 in hand, firing at looters.

Don't kid yourself. Their is a major differance, between punks in the streets and hungry people. In the begining its going to be a mad house just like that riot, and as you say, they are going to go after the easy targets. But they arnt going to forget where you are and as they run out of easy targets and have to go after harder and harder ones in order to eat, you can bet your last can of corn, that if you have it their going to try and get it. Unless your prepaired to go solo or at best in very small bands, being sure to stay hidden, and on the move, your going to remain a target for every roving band that comes your way. Unless your going to operate out of a remote cave, you WILL be attacked at some point. In all likely hood continually. And the longer time that passes before your house is found, the better organized and larger those roving bands are going to be. If they think you have large stores of food. They don't have to rush you, if you dont have a constant source of water in your bunker, your going to have to come out. A week, two, a month.two months. And the longer it takes for you to come out, will only tell them they hit the jackpot. All they gota do then is keep you pinned in with a few while the rest go other places to to forger and hunt. Once you come out for water, then the odds pass well into their favor. If you dont have a plan to at least try to make your trusted goup larger over time surviving in the begining wont mean much. Sooner or later your going to be overwelmed and taken down. Solo and mobile is the best in the begining but stationary and solo is going to be deadly in the end. A moving target is always harder to hit. Just my opinion.
